Kočevski gozdni med z zaščiteno označbo porekla (Kočevje Forest Honey with Protected Designation of Origin) is produced in the woodlands of the Kočevje region, which ranks among the best preserved area in Europe due to its unspoilt nature and which is renowned for its highly wooded terrain. 95% of the Kočevje woods are comprised of forest trees, which leave a profound mark on the Kočevski gozdni med (Kočevje Forest Honey).

The flora on the fringes of the woods, meadow lands and swamp vegetation contribute heavily to the diversity of the honey bee forage as well.

Due to its pristine nature, the Kočevje forest landscape is recognized as one of the most preserved regions in Europe and is renowned for its abundant forest cover.

Quality

Kočevski gozdni med (Kočevje Forest Honey) meets higher quality standards than those set by the Rules on Honey as its moisture content has to be lower than 18.6% and its HMF (HydroxyMethylFurfural) content less than 10 mg/kg.

The Kočevski gozdni med (Kočevje Forest Honey) can be recognised by its uniform label and the sealing label on the jar lid, by the Združenje Kočevski Med association logo and by the national and European quality symbols.


Production area

Kočevski gozdni med (Kočevje Forest Honey) is obtained in the Republic of Slovenia’s area comprising the municipalities of Kočevje, Kostel, Osilnica, Loški Potok, Sodražica, and Ribnica, as well as in part the municipalities of Črnomelj, Semič, Dolenjske Toplice, Žužemberk, Velike Lašče, and Dobrepolje.
