Slovenian beekeeping is distinguished by good practices and high standards of honey production. Slovenia has three protected quality schemes at EU level in the field of honey: Slovenski med with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), Kočevski gozdni med with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Kraški med with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
The project "Promotion of PGI and PDO honey quality schemes" is supported by the European Union, which aims to raise awareness of the benefits of EU agricultural products and foodstuffs with European quality labels. The project to promote honey from European quality schemes aims to continue the promotional activities of the previous project, which ran between 2017 and 2020. The main objective is to raise consumer awareness of the importance of higher quality honey, highlighting the higher quality of honey in accordance with the National Honey Regulation, controlled quality, traceability of production and known origin. On the other hand, the aim is to raise beekeepers' awareness through various activities and to encourage them to join quality schemes, leading to a higher market income for honey sold from quality schemes.
